About the Program

The Older Adult Home Modification Program (OAHMP), funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), helps low-income older adults (62+) remain safely in their homes.
The program provides low-cost, high-impact modifications that reduce fall risks, improve accessibility, and enhance overall safety.

Goals:

  • Enable aging in place by adapting homes to changing needs

  • Reduce injuries from falls and home hazards

  • Improve independence and functional ability

Who Qualifies?

Who Can Apply for OAHMP?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are 62 years of age or older
  • Own and live in your primary residence
  • Have a household income below HUD limits
  • Require modifications or adaptive equipment to improve home safety and prevent falls

What’s Included in the Program?

The program offers a free home safety assessment and installation of essential modifications performed by a licensed handyman or contractor, guided by a team of professionals including an Occupational Therapist (OT) and a Registered Nurse (RN).

Eligible Modifications & Adaptive Equipment:

  • Grab bars and handrails

  • ADA-height toilets

  • Shower chairs and seat risers

  • Sink and plumbing repairs

  • Medical adaptive equipment

  • Accessibility ramps

  • Lighting improvements

  • Other safety-related home updates

All materials, equipment, and services are provided at no cost to eligible participants.

  • Apply for the Program – Contact NWHP to confirm eligibility.
  • Home Safety Assessment – Occupational Therapist and Registered Nurse visit your home to assess needs.

  • Professional Installation – A licensed handyman/contractor completes approved modifications.
