About the Program

The program was initiated by the Northwest Suburban Housing Collaborative in 2014. In late 2017, the service area expanded to include all towns in Palatine and Wheeling Townships as well as Oak Park Township.

Funding is provided in whole or in part through an award from AgeOptions, with grants from the Illinois Department on Aging and the Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, under Title III of the Older Americans Act.

Senior Handyman Program

Who Qualifies?

The program is designed for:

  • Seniors age 60+

  • Residents with the greatest economic and social needs

  • Low- to moderate-income individuals

  • Seniors with limited English proficiency

The program focuses on helping older adults who may not have the financial means or family support to keep up with minor home repairs, ensuring they can remain safe and independent at home.

Funding & Financial Eligibility

The program is funded in part by AgeOptions, through grants from the Illinois Department on Aging and the Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services under Title III of the Older Americans Act.

  • Services are intended to be low-cost or grant-supported.

  • Seniors with low to moderate income may receive additional priority.

  • Luxury or non-essential upgrades are not covered — the focus is on safety and accessibility repairs.

  • The property must be owner-occupied (rental or landlord-owned properties are not eligible).

  • Homeowners may qualify for up to $25,000 in financial assistance for essential health, safety, or code-related repairs.

  • Applicants must be current on mortgage payments and property taxes.

  • The household must have an income at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI), based on household size.

  • Funds may not be used for cosmetic or luxury improvements.

  • Arlington Heights

  • Buffalo Grove

  • Mount Prospect

  • Palatine

  • Rolling Meadows
  • Des Plaines

  • All other towns in Palatine Township and Wheeling Township

  • Oak Park Township, including Oak Park and River Forest
